In the second installment of the Yoga Week here at bitehype we have Aubry Wiltcher, an inspirational Yogi who lives in California.
This is Aubry:
What a great handstand variation!
We asked Aubry about her favorite yoga poses and she answered:
“dancer (natarajasana), wheel (urdhva dhanurasana), handstand (adho mukha vrksasana)”
Let’s have a look at these yoga poses in detail
This incredible pose is also called Natarajasana, which is Sankrit and means Dancer and King (dancing king?). This is how it looks:
It is an asana, which basically means a holding position, you keep for some time. Stand on one foot, lift your other foot from the floor and grab with your hand of the same side (in the beginning you won’t be able to lift it as high as in the picture, give it time). The free hand points directly to your front, in a straight line. Also don’t forget to keep your head up and look into the straight direction.
Wheel (urdhva dhanurasana)
This is another asana, which a lot of people also know as the bridge. It looks like this:
As you can see in the picture, Aubry is doing the Wheel on her tippy toes, that’s once you got the Wheel and want to advance even further!
For starters, this is how you can get started:
Once you have your hands on the wall, slowly try to go down and come back up. Again, this is a difficult move for a lot of people, so give it time, you’ll get better with time!
Glute bridges strengthen your glutes and hamstrings, so you can actually hold yourself in the Wheel position.
And finally we have Neck bridges:
Once you’re comfortable with these three exercises, you can get into the neck bridge position, and push yourself up from there into the Wheel or “urdhva dhanurasana”.
Handstand (adho mukha vrksasana)
The Handstand is a great pose for a lot of Yogis, it’s also one of Aubry’s favorites. We looked at the handstand in detail in Kathryn’s post, so check it out here.
But that shouldn’t keep us from showing you some great handstand poses by Aubry:
A sneakerhead who does Yoga?!
Yes, you read that right, Aubry is not only a great Yogi, she also collects sneakers (and looks damn good in them!).
Check out her collection:
Her favorite pair?
The Air Jordan 1 White / Black-Red (great choice!), which looks like this
How can I get started with Yoga?
That’s basically the last question we asked Aubry, in order to get some tips from the pro.
Her answer: “…that’s a tough one ’cause everyone is different. Whatever it is just take that first step- start stretching every morning, go to a local yoga class, download an app, try web services like yogaglo.com. Also its important to remember that there are so many different types of yoga and styles of classes, studios etc if you don’t like one keep looking!”
There you have it people, just get started.
If you’re totally lost and don’t know where to start, we hooked you up with a free PDF with some common yoga poses, check this out:
